Lagos, the metropolitan coastal city of Nigeria, played host to the coveted annual Glo-CAF Awards that took place on Tuesday, 10 February 2009, proudly sponsored by Globacom Nigeria Limited.

The challenging task of giving the 2008 Glo-CAF Awards a look-and-feel that could contend with any of its international counterparts was appointed to True Colour Events. The planning, organising and execution of a prestigious event such as the 2008 Glo-CAF Awards left no margin for error, despite glitches and time constraints including cargo delays of technical equipment and décor from South Africa, draping and flower technicalities from local suppliers and venue difficulties which in all were conquered to produce the prestigious event. “Our track-record in the industry as well as our extensive experience with large-scale international events such as this provided the foundation to give the event its trademark ‘glow',” says Bobby Scott of True Colour Events.

Logistically the event demanded extensive planning in terms of ensuring that all the creative elements came together as planned and within a very tight timeframe. “The entertainment line-up included some heavy-weight performers such as Yvonne Chaka Chaka, King Mensah, 3 Tons of Fun, Kwela Tebza, P'Squared, Youssou N'dour and a colourful array of dancers, tumblers, unicyclists, jugglers and stilt walkers that gave the event a truly African feel with a vibrant and sporty undertone,” says Bobby.

The event attracted a throng of adoring fans and supporters who hoped to catch a glimpse of their favourite player. The 2008 Glo-CAF Awards was well supported by high-ranking Nigerian government officials and personalities such as Issa Hayatou the CAF president, Dr Mike Adenuga the Chairman of Globacom Limited Nigeria and FIFA President Sepp Blatter, which squarely placed the event at the top of the social calendar.

The African Footballer of the Year Award is one of the highlights on the African Soccer Calendar during which the best of the best battle it out for the coveted title of player of the year. The event was established by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in 1992 and the finalists are traditionally decided following votes from the head coaches of the 54 national associations affiliated to CAF. Nigerian-born Togo forward, Emmanuel Oluwaseyi Adebayor, clinched the title of best player in Africa amongst finalists Michael Essien (Chelsea and Ghana) and Mohammed Aboutrika (Al-Ahly and Egypt) that paved the way for much celebration in the host country.
